GORSKI KOTAR – A PIECE OF HISTORY

This area was (inspite of the rough climate) inhabited in Roman's period and belong to two Roman's provinces. It is believed that near Lešće the roman fortification Levand was standing.

It is believed that Croatian tribes came to this area down the Kupa Valley from The Panonian Valley (aprox.in eighth century).

The medieval period was brutal for this area because of the Turk's invazions when local inhabitans had been taken to the Turk's slavery or escaped to the nearby Kranjska ( today Slovenia).

The truth is that this area had been attacked by Turks for more than 400 years, but never conqured due to the efforts of local inhabitans.

The memory of period of Turk's invasions has been existing until today in many legends ( the legend of Giant Petar Klepac) and many names of places on different locations.  E.i. the village Turki is named after the place where Turk's had their camp, Begovo razdolje is the name for Beg's Valley ( beg is Turk's lord).

When Turk's attacks stopped most of the sons and grandchildren of escaped inhabitans returned to their old homeland. They returned forever this time!

The living in Kranjska changed their language: many dialects in Gorski kotar are similar to Slovenian dialects more than the other Croatian dialects.

In 17 century count Zrinski inhebited (for the necesity of maining and the blacksmits' craft) people from Saska (Germany) so  many last names are of German origin as Ersen, Pretner, Prezel and Wolf.

All these imigrants, due to their knowledge in many crafts, made all ways of life in Gorski kotar richer and better.

The truth is that the imigrants were asimilated by the Slav genes: most of them feel themselves Croats today.

Due to the historical facts in medieval period this area belonged to Frankopan Counts who were spreading economic and cultural activities there.

The most important development of this happened in 18 century when many roads connecting Karlovac and the Adriatic Sea were built: Jozefina Road, Karolina Road and Luiziana Road.

They have been  used for traffic till nowdays as well.

In the middle of the 19th century the railway that connects Budapest and Rijeka was built.

It is considered that the birthday of Gorski kotar is on 07.11.1778 when, by the decision of Queen Maria Terezia, Proccesus Montanus( that menas Mountanious County) was established as the administrative county. It had been existing in that manner till sixties of twentieth century.

Since 2008 the birthday of Gorski kotar has been celebrated every year on seventh of November.
