In the very heart of Gorski kotar the municipality of Mrkopalj is situated.
It contains villages Mrkopalj and Begovo Razdolje, Tuk and Sunger with Brestova Draga and Bukovac Sungerski.
Mrkopalj is situated at the large Mrkopalj field surrounded by the coniferous forests after which is Mrkopalj named for ( croatian word mrk is equivalent for english word dark).
- Zagrebˈs Academic club organized in Mrkopalj the first course for skiers and after that the first ski competition.
- the first Croatian ski jump was built and two years later a competition in ski jumpings was held.
This area gives many opportunities to cyclists, climbers but also to those who just enjoy the beautiful nature and like walking.
Skiing spot Čelimbaša is in very heart of Mrkopalj.
There are three routes for skiing in it: Touristic route(red) 1350 m long, Sunny(red) 1000m long and Dinkoˈs (black) 500 m long.
To the top, which is 1074 high, takes you ski-lift 750 m long.
Every year is the celebration of the Saint-Protectors of Mrkopalj : saints Phillip and Jacob. It brings many visitors to this picturesque place.
Mrkopalj is also a start point to the nearby mountain peaks: Bijele i Samarske stijene (cliffs) and Bjelolasica.
